The Bernalillo County District Attorney's Race

You may not have heard a lot about this race, with all the attention these days on the presidential campaigns, as well as all our congressional races. But this is a hotly contested race between an incumbent (Brandenburg) who has been in the District Attorney's seat now since 2001, and a take-no-prisoners challenger in Republican Lisa Torraco. it's a fascinating debate, because the two women seem to have drastically different philosophies about how a DA's office should be run. I don't know about you, but I have no idea how a DA's office should be run, so it makes it interesting for voters to decide which way to cast your ballot. We sat down on Sunday with both candidates to talk about the race. We hope the interview helps voters get a better feel for the race, and the candidates.

Another interesting part of this race is the obvious disdain and dislike these two women have for each other. If the interview itself doesn't give you a taste of that, just check out the brief exchange between the two women after we wrapped up the formal interview. For visual reference, Kari Brandenburg is seated to the right of David in this clip, and Lisa Torraco is off camera to the left. David asks the women about how they get their message out there in a year with so many other high profile races. Lisa claims Kari has the advantage because she is the incumbent, and Kari fires back with the fact that she works 15 hour days in her job, and therefore doesn't have any advantage in being able to get her message out to the public.

I would just like to say first and fore most this is a huge disappointment to me on behalf of Lisa Torraco as educated as she is she should talk as such not just on this show but every time she speaks. The public she speaks to is aware that as she say "cops catch the bad guys" of what our law enforcement does. Secondly I have yet to hear Lisa speak at all to what she is going to do in office should she take over Kari Brandenburg career. I was also extremely concerned with her ability to remain calm as Kari did during this interview when she was being refuted by information that has been shown in Kari's office. I would like to commend Kari on her ability to speak to what she has done and will continue to do in office as opposed to stooping to Lisa's level and constantly criticizing her opponent. On this note I would like to close by saying that Lisa has blatantly lied to the public and did not change her campaign information until after false information was put on her cards that she had 16 years prosecution experience when she only has six she did not change until she was notified of this after a sorry attempt to campaign at the Gun Show back in August which she failed to attend. Lisa Has made a sorry representation of herself which in my eyes is a poor decision based on how many voters will have used absentee ballots and are attending early voting this year.

I am extremely disappointed
at the way your station presented the DA candidate forum. You apparently preferred to direct your comments towards petty and unbalanced "analysis" instead
of allowing adequate time for the candidates themselves to express
their positions on the issues.
In this case the challenger, Ms. Torraco, has repeatedly misrepresented her own qualifications and repeatedly lied to the public about Ms. Brandenburg's record in office as District Attorney. The public should have been allowed to hear much more from Ms. Brandenburg in response to these unfair accusations.
Deceitful claims are quickly and casually made, but generally require more than a brief "sound-byte" to fairly defend. You denied Ms. Brandenburg that opportunity while allowing
Ms. Torraco to continue to misrepresent these issues to the public. That was a great disservice to us all! I had expected much more from your station.
