In many ways, the 2008 legislative session went out with a whimper. That's not to say there wasn't a lot of grumbling that went along with that whimper. But the bottom line is, as a state, we are in much the same place now as we were before the session started.
That said, I don't want to underestimate the importance of the most high profile issue of the session: the budget. At right around 6 billion dollars, that is definitely not a number to just gloss over. And, with revenues expected to drop again next year, it will be interesting to see how our representatives in the Roundhouse plan to keep the budget in line. Many of the lawmakers we talked to this week already understand that, as you will hear if you watch the clip below.
Of course, THE LINE panelists also have a lot to say about not only this year's session, but also the growing tensions between lawmakers and the governor. I have to say I was a little shocked to hear so many lawmakers, including democrats, referring to Mr. Richardson as a lame duck governor. It's much more obvious, however, what the governor thinks about those descriptions. Click below to watch the entire segment of THE LINE from this week's episode.
And lastly, I want to make sure everyone got to see our profile of the state employees that work so hard to keep the Roundhouse rolling during the legislative session. I wish we had time to talk to them all, but I think the message from our interviews is clear. These folks take a lot of pride in their work, and they should make us all as New Mexico citizens proud.
That's all for now, but keep in mind we'll be talking health care reform (or the lack thereof) on next week's show. Let us know what aspects of this issue you want us to cover, by leaving us a comment!
