THE CIVIL WAR Debuts

The landmark 11-hour series THE CIVIL WAR debuts on PBS.

Steve Thomas and Norm Abram bring THIS OLD HOUSE to Santa Fe for a series of programs showing the renovation of a traditional adobe home.

KNME-TV presents NEW MEXICO CRACKDOWN, a look at what New Mexicans can do to turn the tide of illegal drugs with Crimestoppers founder Greg MacAleese, in conjunction with KOAT-TV7.

KNME-TV presents FIRST THINGS FIRST: A NEW MEXICO TOWN HALL MEETING ON THE ENVIORNMENT in conjunction with KOB-TV4.

KNME-TV produces NEW MEXICO STATE LEGISLATURE: A PROCESS OF THE PEOPLE with a grant from the state legislature for use in high school government classes.


COLORES! Make It Beautiful

UNM’s Department of Psychiatry and KNME-TV host a teleconference for mental health professionals. COLORES! Is honored by the Albuquerque Conservation Association for its significant contribution to the arts in the community.

The KNME-TV Store opens, offering PBS program-related books, toys and video- cassettes.


1991


KNME-TV presents Kaleidoscope, a children’s art workshop cosponsored by Hallmark Cards, at Winrock Center.

The station presents TO PROTECT AND SERVE offering the Albuquerque Police Department the opportunity to respond to community allegations of excessive use of force. The program includes an encore presentation of the award-winning documentary BLACK & WHITE.

THE PUEBLO PEOPLES: FIRST CONTACT airs as part of COLORES!

The premiere of WHERE IN THE WORLD IS CARMEN SANDIEGO?, a series designed to teach geography in an exciting game-show format.


1992


KNME-TV hosts its first DISCOVERLAND FOR CHILDREN carnival.

3-2-1 CONTACT presents “What Kids Want to know about Sex and Growing Up.”

THE McNEIL/LEHRER NEWSHOUR joins forces with NBCNews for coverage of the national political conventions. GED ON TV, a telecourse offering a high school equivalency diploma broadcast in conjunction with Albuquerque T-VI premiums in September.


SURVIVING COLUMBUS wins a Peabody Award

SURVIVING COLUMBUS, the story of the Pueblo people’s 450-year struggle for survival, is broadcast nationally on PBS on Columbus Day. Produced by KNME-TV and the institute of American Indian Arts, SURVIVING COLUMBUS wins a Peabody Award.

Alistar Cooke steps down as host of MASTERPIECE THEATRE.

“BARNEY AND FRIENDS” debuts on PBS.


1993


“Danzante,” a KNME-TV production originally broadcast as part of the COLORES series was also broadcast nationally by PBS.

KNME-TV broadcasts STREET GANGS, a documentary look at youth gangs in Albuquerque and a town hall meeting addressing the issues. The program is broadcast as part of the STOP THE VIOLENCE campaign of the United Way of Greater Albuquerque and Youth Development In hopes of encouraging viewers to get involved and solve the problem.

KNME-TV, in conjunction with KRQE-TV13 and the Albuquerque Tribune, presents the town hall meeting A QUESTION OF ETHICS, looking at ethics reform in the state legislature.


PBS KIDS Premieres

Russell Baker is named the new host of MASTERPIECE THEATRE.


1994


Ken Burns’ BASEBALL debuts.


1995


KNME’s Pledge tops $2 million.


1996


In October KNME joined forces with St. Joseph’s Women’s Health Care and Wild Oats Community Market to Sponsor “Women’s Health Fair”

KNME teams with the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico to honor five of the states educations.

ANTIQUES ROAD show premieres, traveling to cities across the US to appraise collectibles viewers may have in their own home.


COLORES! Volcanoes

KNME is launched into cyberspace with a site on the World Wide Web, providing information about the station and its services.

KNME Community Advisory Board hosted town hall meetings in cities of Clayton, Santa Rosa, and Raton during the year.

ARTHUR debuts. The animated children’s series is based upon Marc Brown’s series of books.

KNME becomes a PBS Ready to Learn station.

The conversion to digital television is announced.

THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW visits Albuquerque for the first time.

1997


PBS pioneers descriptive video.

“Albuquerque’s Places of the Heart,” a fond remembrance of the Duke City’s historical and cultural landmarks, debuts on COLORES!

The news and public affairs series IN FOCUS debuts.

Emmeline, an opera by composer Tobias Picker, makes it world premiere at the Santa Fe Opera. The performance is broadcast on GREAT PERFORMANCES in April 1997.

    On May 1, KNME-TV signs on with a broadcast of UNM professor Edith Buchanan’s freshman English class. The station operates from a converted sorority house that later becomes the home of UNM’s Speech and Communications Department.
